Mala Manwani, a 65-year-old female, and her son Rishi Manwani, 32, were discovered shot to death inside their Aldie, Virginia, home on January 31, 2018. Authorities were alerted to the situation after Mala, who worked as a tax accountant, did not report to her job for a couple of days. Responding to a request to check on her welfare, Loudoun County sheriff's deputies entered the residence and found the bodies of the mother and son in separate areas of the house.

This led to the arrest of Brian K. Welsh, a 38-year-old from Herndon, Virginia, in March 2018. Welsh was acquainted with Rishi as both a friend and a customer. In a surprising development, the murder charges against Welsh were dropped in August 2018. This came after ballistics analysis determined that the bullets extracted from the victims' bodies were not fired from Welsh's gun. Despite being released from jail, Welsh was still considered a suspect in the ongoing investigation.
Following a thorough investigation that utilized expert testimony in fields such as firearms, DNA analysis, and cell phone forensics, Brian K. Welsh was tried for the murders. A Loudoun County jury found him guilty on two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony in February 2021.
