The events of that fateful day unfolded
at a family gathering, tinged with recent sorrow over the death of the suspect's father. An argument broke out between Wade and her boyfriend of a few months, Orion J. Painter, culminating in the sound of a single gunshot. In the immediate aftermath, Painter fled the scene, sparking a two-week manhunt that ended with his apprehension in the nearby city of Waynesboro.
The investigation that followed painted a grim picture of a possessive relationship. Authorities revealed that Painter used a stolen. 22-caliber handgun in the commission of the crime.
