In the quiet coastal town of Colonial Beach, Virginia, the life of 31-year-old Marlane Christina King was tragically cut short on April 3, 2020. On that day, concerned for her well-being, a family member requested that police perform a welfare check at her residence on Second Street. When officers arrived, they were met by Martin Edenilson Flores, who lived with King, but he denied them entry, claiming she had left earlier. This refusal prompted the officers to obtain a search warrant.
Upon returning with the legal authority to enter, the officers discovered a grim scene inside the home. Marlane King was found deceased on the second floor; she had been shot multiple times. The investigation into her death quickly pointed to Flores as the primary suspect. He had initially told investigators that King had taken her own life, a claim that was swiftly contradicted by the evidence. An autopsy revealed she had sustained three gunshot wounds, including one to the head.
The investigation uncovered that Flores had attempted to manipulate the scene to support his false narrative of suicide. He went as far as to remove the spent cartridges from the revolver and replace them with unfired bullets. While he had contacted King's father on the day of her death, he never alerted law enforcement or emergency medical services. An informant later told prosecutors that Flores confessed to shooting King because he felt she had disrespected him.
Martin Edenilson Flores, who was 41 at the time of his arrest, was initially charged with second-degree murder. This charge was later upgraded, and he was ultimately convicted of first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and shooting into an occupied dwelling. In March 2022, a judge sentenced Flores to 73 years in prison, with 23 years suspended, resulting in an active sentence of 50 years. This sentence exceeded the state's recommended guidelines, which called for a maximum of 40 years.
