On a tragic summer day in Amelia, Virginia, 16-year-old Lucas Matthew Hanna lost his life on July 2, 2022. The young man, known to enjoy hunting, fishing, and spending time with friends, was a student at Amelia High School.
Initial reports suggested that the male teenager had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his right shoulder. However, as the Amelia County Sheriff's deputies delved deeper into the circumstances surrounding his death, the investigation took a different turn.
It soon became apparent that Lucas had not taken his own life.
The focus of the investigation shifted to a 17-year-old acquaintance, Michael Lee Cook. On July 26, 2022, Cook was arrested and initially charged with voluntary manslaughter in connection with Lucas's death. As more evidence came to light, the charges against Cook were upgraded to felony murder, brandishing a weapon, and obstruction. The Amelia County Commonwealth's Attorney stated that a review of the evidence made it clear that the incident was a murder, not a case of manslaughter.
In March 2023, Michael Lee Cook, who had since turned 18, was sentenced for his role in the shooting death of Lucas Hanna. A judge in the Amelia County Circuit Court ordered him to serve 23 years and four months in prison. The court denied a request to have Cook sentenced as a juvenile.
