In the quiet, early morning hours of August 31, 2012, the life of 24-year-old Bryan Matthew Breen was tragically cut short in what should have been the familiar and safe environment of his workplace. A well-liked cashier at the Pathmark supermarket in Old Bridge, New Jersey, Breen was known for his friendly and outgoing personality. A graduate of Old Bridge High School, he had been a dedicated employee at Pathmark since 2005, working to save money for college with aspirations of becoming a teacher. Friends and family remembered him as a loyal and honest person with a passion for reading, writing, and spending time with those he cared about.
The events that unfolded in the pre-dawn hours were sudden and violent. A co-worker, 23-year-old Terence Tyler, an ex-Marine who had only recently started working at the store, entered the supermarket around 4 a.m. armed with an AK-47 and an automatic pistol.
Without apparent specific targets, Tyler opened fire indiscriminately at his colleagues who were present in the store. While ten employees managed to escape the horrific scene, Bryan Breen and another co-worker, 18-year-old Cristina LoBrutto, were fatally shot.
The attack concluded when Terence Tyler turned the gun on himself, ending his own life at the scene of the rampage.
