In the late summer evening of August 20, 2020, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace on the 400 block of Grant Avenue in Plainfield, New Jersey. When the echoes faded and police arrived at the scene, they discovered two men who had been struck by bullets. One of these men was 30-year-old Cory Johnson, a resident of Plainfield.
Tragically, Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene, his life cut short by the violent encounter.
The second victim, who has not been publicly identified, was rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. He was initially listed in critical but stable condition. The shooting prompted an immediate and intensive investigation, led by the Union County Homicide Task Force in conjunction with the Plainfield Police Division, the Union County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit, and the Union County Police Department Ballistics Unit.
In the days following the shooting, authorities reached out to the public for assistance in solving the crime. The Union County Crime Stoppers offered a reward of up to $10,000 for any information that would lead to an arrest and indictment in the case. Despite this incentive and the ongoing investigation, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in the killing of Cory Johnson. The case remains an open and active homicide investigation.
