On a tragic day in April 2021, the life of 34-year-old Massiel Cindy S. Deoleo was cut short in Carlstadt, New Jersey. The series of events that led to her death began to unfold on Saturday, April 3rd, when her concerned relatives reported her missing. They had been unable to reach her and discovered her Mahwah home in a state of disarray. Their concern led police to the Carlstadt residence of her ex-husband, 43-year-old James Cox.
When officers arrived at Cox's home to conduct a welfare check, the situation quickly escalated. Cox presented a semi-automatic weapon and threatened to take his own life, initiating a tense standoff with law enforcement that would last for several hours. The Bergen County Regional SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called to the scene in an attempt to de-escalate the situation peacefully. Despite their prolonged efforts, the standoff ended in tragedy.
Late that evening, after hours of negotiation, the SWAT team entered the residence.
Inside, they discovered both Cox and Deoleo deceased. The investigation concluded that Cox had fatally shot Massiel Deoleo on the evening of Friday, April 2nd, before taking his own life following the standoff.
