In the late morning of November 16, 2022, a dispute over a dog in a Washington Township, New Jersey, apartment complex parking lot escalated into a fatal encounter for Victor Marrero Jr., a 39-year-old male. Marrero was found by police in the parking lot of the Birches Apartments on Fries Mill Road, having sustained gunshot wounds. The tragic incident unfolded at approximately 10:26 a.m. after reports of gunshots drew officers to the scene.
An argument between Marrero and another man, identified as 26-year-old Zachary A. Lahneman, a resident of the apartment complex, preceded the shooting. Witnesses reported that the verbal altercation turned physical, but Marrero had begun to retreat when Lahneman allegedly fired two shots. According to Marrero's wife, the conflict arose from threats Lahneman made regarding the family's dog and their children.
An autopsy later confirmed that Marrero's death was a homicide caused by the shooting.
Responding officers quickly took Zachary A. Lahneman into custody near the scene after a witness identified him as the shooter. A gun was subsequently found inside Lahneman's apartment. He was arrested and charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Lahneman was then lodged in the Salem County Correctional Facility to await further court proceedings. A judge later ruled that he would remain in jail pending his trial.
