On August 11, 2006, 61-year-old Viola Mae Morgan and her sister, Betty A. Brown, 63, were killed in a violent attack at their residence in Reading Township, Michigan. The sisters lived in the Avra Estates mobile home park in Hillsdale County, a community that became the scene of a chaotic confrontation initiated by a neighbor.
The events unfolded when 55-year-old Stephen Moench, who lived across from the women, began acting erratically. Witnesses reported that Moench started throwing stones at the victims before escalating the violence significantly. Armed with a shotgun, Moench opened fire on the sisters, fatally wounding both Viola Morgan and Betty Brown. During the rampage, Moench also discharged his weapon at a neighboring mobile home, severing a natural gas line which subsequently ignited a fire. Two other women inside that neighboring home managed to escape the flames and gunfire without physical injury.
Law enforcement responded to the scene, and Stephen Moench was taken into custody. Investigators determined the shooting was intentional, and Moench was charged with multiple felonies, including two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Morgan and Brown. He also faced three counts of attempted murder related to the other individuals endangered during the incident, as well as charges for arson and the careless discharge of a weapon.
Following a trial in the Hillsdale County Circuit Court, a jury found Moench guilty on all counts in late August 2007. During the proceedings, testimony highlighted Moench’s irrational behavior leading up to the murders, which had previously alarmed neighbors. In September 2007, Stephen Moench was sentenced to mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murders of Viola Morgan and Betty Brown.
