On May 14, 2010, JeRean Blake Nobles, a 17-year-old high school senior, was fatally shot outside a party store on Detroit's east side. Just weeks away from his graduation, the young man, known as 'Blake' to his friends and family, was a member of the JROTC with aspirations of becoming a Marine and then an engineer. His life was cut short following a seemingly trivial argument. The male suspect, who had been on a moped, reportedly left after the dispute, promising to return.
He made good on that promise, arriving in an SUV and opening fire, ending Nobles' life.
The investigation into JeRean's murder quickly led police to identify Chauncey Owens as the primary suspect. This identification set in motion a tragic chain of events that would claim another young life. Two days after Nobles' death, in the early morning hours of May 16, 2010, Detroit's Special Response Team, accompanied by a film crew for the reality TV show 'The First 48,' raided a home where they believed Owens was hiding. During the raid, a flash grenade was thrown through a window, and an officer's weapon discharged, killing 7-year-old Aiyana Stanley-Jones as she slept on the living room couch. Owens was found in the upstairs apartment of the duplex and surrendered without incident.
In the aftermath, the legal process for JeRean's death moved forward. Chauncey Owens was charged with first-degree murder. Another man, Charles Jones, who was Aiyana Stanley-Jones's father, was charged with providing Owens with the gun used in the shooting. Owens initially agreed to a plea deal for a lesser sentence in exchange for naming the person who gave him the weapon, but he later refused to cooperate, leading to his plea being thrown out and the case proceeding to trial.
Ultimately, a jury found Chauncey Owens guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of JeRean Blake Nobles. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Before his sentencing, Nobles' mother, Lyvonne Cargill, addressed the court, expressing the profound and lasting pain of losing her son. In a separate verdict, Charles Jones was found guilty of second-degree murder for his role in the crime.
