Brenda Echelbarger, a 45-year-old Caucasian woman, passed away on January 15, 2015, in a tragic event that unfolded in her Harrison, Michigan, home located in Hayes Township. A lifelong resident of Harrison, born on January 11, 1970, she had built a life dedicated to her family and her career in nursing. After graduating from Harrison Community Schools in 1988 and later earning her Registered Nurse degree from Mid Michigan Community College in 1994, she rose to the position of nursing
supervisor at MidMichigan Medical Center-Gratiot in Alma. Those who knew her remembered her for her love of reading, boating, camping, and the cherished time she spent with her grandchildren.
The circumstances of her death were determined by authorities to be a murder-suicide. Brenda was fatally shot by her 65-year-old husband, Gerald Dean Echelbarger, who then used the same weapon to take his own life. The incident left the local community in shock, as there had been no public indications of underlying issues that might lead to such a violent outcome. The case was quickly classified, and with the perpetrator deceased, the investigation was concluded.
As the sole individual responsible for Brenda's death was her husband, who died at the scene, there were no arrests made or suspects sought in connection with the case.
