In the early morning hours of August 16, 2018, a tragedy unfolded in Camden Township, Michigan, that would claim the life of 64-year-old Alexander Lee Dombrowski. A farmer and a veteran of the U.S. Army, Dombrowski was a lifelong resident of the area, known for his love of hunting, fishing, and spending time with his many grandchildren. His life was cut short when he was fatally shot inside his home on Grange Road.
The events of that morning began to unravel around 4:07 a.m. when deputies from the Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the Dombrowski residence following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene. Not only had Alexander Dombrowski been shot inside his house, but a second man, 56-year-old Timothy John Curtiss, was found deceased in the front yard. Curtiss, a neighbor, had apparently responded to calls for help coming from the Dombrowski home and was also shot.
The suspect in the double homicide was identified as Alexander Lee Dombrowski Jr., the 36-year-old son of the elder victim. After the shootings, he fled the residence on foot, prompting an extensive search by law enforcement, including deputies and troopers from the Michigan State Patrol. Several hours later, at approximately 9:04 a.m., a deputy spotted the younger Dombrowski walking in a field south of the crime scene. He was taken into custody without incident.
Following his arrest, Alexander Lee Dombrowski Jr. was lodged in the Hillsdale County Jail and subsequently charged with two counts of open murder. During the legal proceedings that followed, it was revealed that he had fatally shot his father and his neighbor. In July 2019, a Hillsdale County Circuit Court jury convicted him of first-degree premeditated murder for the death of his father and second-degree murder for the death of Timothy Curtiss. He was also convicted of felony-firearm charges. As a result of his convictions, Alexander Lee Dombrowski Jr. was sentenced to a mandatory term of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
