Derrick Williams, a 22-year-old African American man from Chicago, Illinois, was fatally shot on September 27, 2009. At the time of his death, Williams had recently moved to Milwaukee with his girlfriend in August 2009 to escape the violence in Chicago and seek employment opportunities. However, during a visit back to Chicago to see his grandmother, he was tragically killed. The shooting occurred while he was walking to a barbecue; a gunman opened fire, and Williams was struck twice in the head.
