Ray Gunter, a 23-year-old jukebox repairman from Oxford, Mississippi, tragically lost his life on September 30, 1962, during the infamous Ole Miss riot. The riot erupted in response to the enrollment of James Meredith, the first African American student at the University of Mississippi. The violent clash involved thousands of segregationists, including students, Ku Klux Klan members, and other individuals from across the South, who opposed Meredith's admission.
