In the quiet town of Mize, Mississippi, a dedicated public servant, 39-year-old James Shirley Wood, met a tragic and untimely end. A Conservation Officer with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, Wood also managed Lake Ross Barnett. His commitment to his duty would ultimately cost him his life on the night of October 21, 1984. Earlier that day, he had issued a citation to a man, an act of routine law enforcement that would escalate into a fatal confrontation.
