In the quiet town of Mize, Mississippi, a dedicated public servant, 39-year-old James Shirley Wood, met a tragic and untimely end. A Conservation Officer with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, Wood also managed Lake Ross Barnett. His commitment to his duty would ultimately cost him his life on the night of October 21, 1984. Earlier that day, he had issued a citation to a man, an act of routine law enforcement that would escalate into a fatal confrontation.
That evening, as Officer Wood was at his home with his family, the man to whom he had issued the citation appeared at his doorstep around 10:00 PM. When Wood's wife answered the door, the man asked to speak with the officer. As Wood came to the front door, he was met with the barrel of a 12-gauge shotgun and was fatally shot. The motive for this violent act was retaliation for the citation Wood had issued earlier in the day.
The aftermath of the shooting sent ripples of shock and grief through the community and among Wood's colleagues. The suspect was quickly apprehended by law enforcement. James Shirley Wood had served with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Conservation for six years and was survived by his wife, two daughters, parents, two sisters, and one brother.
