On a summer afternoon in Horn Lake, Mississippi, the life of 20-year-old Demetria Presley was tragically cut short. On Thursday, August 13, 2020, Presley was found in the parking lot of the Tulane Park Apartments with a gunshot wound to her chest. Emergency services were called to the scene, and she was swiftly transported to Regional One Health in Memphis, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

Investigators quickly identified a suspect: 23-year-old Corey Woods, Jr. of Hernando. Woods and Presley had been in a previous relationship and shared a child. Witnesses at the apartment complex positively identified Woods as the shooter. Following the shooting, Woods fled the scene in a white Honda Accord. The vehicle was later discovered abandoned in Memphis, but Woods was nowhere to be found.

Law enforcement issued a bulletin, describing Woods as armed and dangerous and seeking the public's assistance in locating him. In a turn of events, Woods' own family members facilitated his surrender to the authorities. On the night of the shooting, Corey Woods, Jr. turned himself into the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department. He was subsequently booked into the DeSoto County Adult Detention Center and charged with murder. Woods was held without bond pending a court appearance.
