In the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in an Olive Branch, Mississippi neighborhood, leaving three people dead. Among the victims was Tommi Lynn Carrier, a 40-year-old mother and grandmother from Hernando. The bodies of Carrier, along with 30-year-old John Lennon Sutherland of Memphis and 33-year-old Tyler Glen Liles of Ellettsville, Indiana, were discovered by police officers who responded to reports of shots fired near Jefferson Drive and
Shiloah Cove around 1:40 a.m. All three had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation quickly led authorities to a suspect, 26-year-old Ivan C. Rodriguez of Cordova, Tennessee. He was apprehended without incident on the same day as the shootings and was initially charged with three counts of first-degree murder. As the investigation progressed, a second individual, 21-year-old Dylan Lee Howard, also from Cordova, was arrested and charged with being an accessory after the fact. While a motive for the triple homicide was not immediately made public by law enforcement, the swift arrests brought a sense of relief to the shocked community.
In March 2023, Ivan C. Rodriguez, then 28, faced a jury for the deaths of Carrier, Sutherland, and Liles. While the prosecution pursued first-degree murder charges, the jury convicted him on the lesser charges of one count of second-degree manslaughter and two counts of second-degree murder. During the emotional sentencing hearing, family members of the victims shared their profound grief and loss. The mothers of Liles and Sutherland expressed their desire for a harsher penalty, while Carrier's uncle stated that he forgave Rodriguez, believing his niece would have done the same. Rodriguez was ultimately sentenced to a total of 60 years in prison for his role in the tragic deaths that marked a violent start to the new year.
