In the early morning hours of December 17, 2022, Christian Saulsberry, a 25-year-old Black male, was at a party in Walls, Mississippi, when his life was cut short. A professional football player for the Canadian Football League's Edmonton Elks, Saulsberry was attending a birthday celebration and clothing reveal party at a residence on Church Road. The gathering, intended to be a joyous occasion, took a tragic turn.
Another attendee, 24-year-old Mark McDaniel of Memphis, had arrived at
the party and became intoxicated, leading to erratic and confrontational behavior. Despite being asked to leave on multiple occasions, McDaniel refused. His escalating aggression resulted in a physical altercation with the party's host. Following the fight, McDaniel went to his car, retrieved a handgun, and began firing indiscriminately into the crowd of partygoers.
Christian Saulsberry, who was an innocent bystander with his back turned to the chaos, was struck by two stray bullets in the abdomen and leg. He had no involvement in the altercations that preceded the shooting. Saulsberry was rushed from the scene but succumbed to his injuries while en route to the hospital.
Later that same day, the Memphis Police Department arrested Mark McDaniel at his residence. He was charged with second-degree murder and extradited to DeSoto County, Mississippi. In November 2024, after a three-day trial, a jury found Mark McDaniel guilty of the second-degree murder of Christian Saulsberry.
