McKaya was accidentally shot by her brother. The circumstances of the shooting pointed to a tragic accident, a conclusion that would be echoed in the subsequent investigation. There was no suspect or suspects identified in her death as it was determined to be a heartbreaking accident, and consequently, no arrests were made.
Following the shooting, McKaya was rushed to OU Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City. For two days, she fought for her life, but her injuries proved too severe. On Thursday evening, March 19, 2015, surrounded by the profound grief of her family, McKaya passed away. Her family, in their time of immense loss, made the compassionate decision to donate her organs, allowing their personal tragedy to bring hope and life to others.
The community of Comanche mourned the loss of a young girl who found joy in playing with her American Girl dolls and Barbies, spending time with her friends and cousins, and sharing moments with her two brothers, Hunter and Tucker. A funeral service was held at the Ray of Hope Church, where family, friends, and community members gathered to remember a life that, though brief, had touched so many. She was laid to rest at Fairlawn Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories in the hearts of those who knew her.
