On a tragic day in Tulsa, Oklahoma, thirty-two-year-old Juanita Engarcia Ibarra was found deceased in her car, which had come to a stop in a traffic lane near 4th Place and Memorial Drive. It was August 28, 2015, and the discovery of her body would set in motion a homicide investigation. Responding to a report of an injured woman, police found Ibarra in the driver's seat with a gunshot wound to the head.
It appeared she had been shot from outside the vehicle.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on two individuals after a crucial piece of evidence came to light. Surveillance footage from a local business captured Ibarra in an argument with two men just before her death. The video showed the men leaving the scene in a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. This vital information allowed the Tulsa Police Department to track the vehicle and identify the suspects.
Within days, authorities had both men in custody. Mario Gallegos, 23, was apprehended while driving the pickup truck seen in the surveillance video. The second suspect, 24-year-old Juan Pablo Ruiz-Olvera, was arrested at a residence nearby. Both men were subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Juanita Ibarra and were held in the Tulsa County jail without bond. Following the legal proceedings, Mario Gallegos was ultimately sentenced to 32 years in prison for his role in her death.
