The investigation revealed
that the homeowner, Mack Brinkley, was the perpetrator of the shooting. After killing Allen, Brinkley took a woman hostage and fled the scene, prompting a multi-agency law enforcement response. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol located Brinkley's vehicle on Highway 3 in neighboring Atoka County, initiating a high-speed pursuit. The chase turned volatile as Brinkley exchanged gunfire with the pursuing troopers.
The confrontation came to a deadly end when Brinkley was shot and killed by law enforcement officers. The female hostage was rescued without any physical harm. In the aftermath, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation took charge of the investigation into Allen's murder, while the OHP conducted a separate inquiry into the officer-involved shooting of Brinkley.
