Eric Ortega, a 34-year-old Hispanic/Latino man from Perryton, Texas, was spending time at a small gathering in a home on North Texas Street in Boise City, Oklahoma, when the quiet of the Panhandle night was shattered in the early hours of February 20, 2022. Shortly after 2 a.m., Cimarron County dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call reporting a shooting at a residence in the 200 block of that street.
Police officers from Boise City and deputies from the Cimarron County Sheriff’s Office arrived to find Ortega suffering from a gunshot wound inside the home. He was rushed to a local hospital, but despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead there a short time later.

From the outset, authorities described him as the sole suspect and stated that he was being held on murder, weapons, and burglary complaints connected to the forced entry and shooting inside the Boise City home.
