In the early hours of May 17, 2014, a quiet street in the Village of Plover, Wisconsin, became the scene of a fatal encounter. Charles Jameson, a 30-year-old Caucasian male from the nearby city of Stevens Point, was shot and killed inside a home on Easlan Drive. The residence belonged to an off-duty Portage County Sheriff's deputy, Tony Gischia.
Just after 1 a.m., Deputy Gischia and another individual returned to the house to a startling and chaotic scene.
They were confronted by Jameson, who was masked and had already gained entry into the home. Investigators later discovered that a fire accelerant had been spread throughout the residence, suggesting a volatile and dangerous situation was unfolding before the homeowners even arrived.
A physical altercation broke out between Jameson and the deputy. During the struggle, Jameson reportedly attacked the deputy with a frying pan. In the ensuing confrontation, Jameson was shot. Despite the immediate response from law enforcement and medical personnel, he died at the scene. The Plover Police Department, leading the investigation, later confirmed that the deputy and the other person present knew Jameson. His vehicle was found parked just north of the deputy's home. The incident was classified as an officer-involved shooting, and no arrests were made in connection with the death of Charles Jameson.
