In the early morning hours of July 26, 2015, the life of Michael Lutz, a 44-year-old Caucasian male, came to a tragic end in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A former Milwaukee police officer, Lutz's death was the culmination of a brief but tense tactical situation involving the Menomonee Falls Police Department. The incident began to unfold after Lutz's ex-wife placed a call to the police, reporting that he had threatened both her and her boyfriend. This prompted a police response, with an officer locating Lutz in his vehicle in Menomonee Falls.
As the officer approached, the situation escalated, and tactical units were called to the scene. For a few hours, police negotiators communicated with Lutz in an attempt to de-escalate the standoff. A tactical vehicle was positioned to block his car, preventing any potential flight. The standoff concluded tragically when Lutz exited his vehicle. In one hand, he held his Milwaukee Police Department badge, and in the other, a handgun. He then sustained an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Lutz was pronounced dead at the scene on the 12300 block of West Mill Road in Milwaukee shortly after 4:00 a.m. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed the cause of death. The Menomonee Falls Police Department handled the investigation into the incident. There were no other individuals arrested or sought as suspects in connection with his death.
At the time of his passing, Lutz was a recent candidate for alderman. He had retired from the Milwaukee Police Department after 17 years of service. His career as an officer had been impacted by a prior incident in 2005 when he was shot in the arm while pursuing a drug suspect. Following his law enforcement career, he became a criminal defense attorney.
