Donte D. Thompson, a 25-year-old Black male, was fatally shot in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on the evening of April 18, 2016. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. in the 1400 block of North 18th Street. Thompson became the city's 30th homicide victim of that year.
The shooting stemmed from a dispute with his father, 44-year-old Winford Thompson. Donte had asked to borrow his father's vehicle for a job interview, a request that Winford denied.
An argument ensued, escalating to the point where Winford Thompson retrieved a handgun.
According to a witness at the scene, Donte was not threatening his father and was unarmed when the shot was fired. The witness reported hearing a gunshot and then seeing Winford standing by the driver's side of the car with a black handgun. After the shooting, Winford initially drove away from the scene.
Shortly after police arrived, Winford Thompson returned to the driveway, exited his vehicle, and approached the officers. He reportedly made a statement to the police, questioning why his son had to fight with him. He was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. Following the investigation, the case was referred to prosecutors, and Winford Thompson was charged with second-degree reckless homicide in the death of his son, Donte.
