In the winter of 2017, a dispute over a pair of sneakers and a small sum of money tragically escalated, leading to the death of 20-year-old Kyle Weary, a Black / African American male. On the evening of January 11th, in a neighborhood near 57th and Hadley in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Weary was fatally shot in the chest.
Investigations into the shooting revealed a growing animosity between Weary and an 18-year-old acquaintance, Decarlos Chambers.
The conflict reportedly began after Weary left a pair of $300 Jordan sneakers at Chambers' home. Chambers refused to return the shoes, demanding that Weary first repay a $15 debt for gas money. The argument intensified, with Chambers allegedly threatening to kill Weary over the matter.
On the night of the incident, Weary, armed with a pistol for what a friend described as "protection," went to the area of Chambers' former residence. Surveillance footage captured Weary firing at a house before turning to run. At that point, an individual who had been positioned behind some bushes emerged and fired at least one shot in Weary's direction. When emergency responders arrived, they found Weary unresponsive and discovered a. 40 caliber pistol in his hand. His death was later ruled a homicide.
Following the investigation, Decarlos Chambers was arrested and charged with first-degree reckless homicide as a party to a crime, with the use of a dangerous weapon. He also faced a charge of possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent of a felony. The case against him proceeded to court, with cash bond set at $100,000.
