On a summer evening in 2019, the life of 24-year-old Laile Vang, an Asian female, was tragically cut short in her family's home in Lake Hallie, Wisconsin. Described by friends and family as a "beautiful soul," Vang was a vibrant young woman who had a passion for sharing her Hmong culture, even creating YouTube videos to teach the language. She was known for her kindness, infectious laugh, and unwavering dedication to her family, often working multiple jobs to help support them. A graduate of Chippewa Falls High School and a student at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, she was remembered as a happy and driven individual who was the glue that held her family together.
The tranquility of that July 28th night was shattered when Ritchie German Jr., a 33-year-old man, forced his way into the Vang residence with a shotgun. In the ensuing chaos, he fatally shot Laile and wounded her parents, Teng Vang and Mai Chang Vang, who bravely confronted him. Her parents sustained such severe injuries that they each had to have an arm amputated, though they were expected to survive. After committing this senseless act of violence, German then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life at the scene.
Investigations following the horrific event revealed a disturbing picture of obsession. Authorities discovered that German had sent unsolicited text messages of a sexual nature to Laile just days before the attack. Laile, who did not know German, had responded to his messages with confusion, asking who he was. There is no evidence to suggest that the two had ever met in person. The motive behind German's actions remains unclear, though investigators have speculated that it may have been driven by a dark infatuation. The items found in his car, including handcuffs, led police to believe he may have been attempting to imitate the recent high-profile kidnapping case of Jayme Closs. Before targeting the Vang family, German had already murdered three of his own relatives: his mother, Bridget German, his brother, Douglas German, and his 8-year-old nephew, Calvin Harris.
