In the late evening of August 20, 2020, a tragic event unfolded in a New Richmond, Wisconsin, apartment building that claimed the life of 53-year-old Richard Rose. A Caucasian male, Rose suffered a fatal gunshot wound in an incident that led to the arrest of two local men. The shooting occurred at approximately 9:40 p.m. on the 600 block of West 8th Street.
According to witness accounts, a wounded Richard Rose emerged from an apartment, exclaiming, “They shot me,” before seeking
refuge in his own residence. Responding officers discovered him with a gunshot wound to his leg and applied a tourniquet in an effort to save his life. Emergency medical services transported him to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The two suspects fled the scene immediately following the shooting but were apprehended by law enforcement a short time later. The individuals taken into custody were identified as 36-year-old Joshua Cameron and 28-year-old Andrew Helmueller, both residents of New Richmond. During his arrest, Cameron was reportedly combative, spitting at officers after they deployed a taser to subdue him.
In the days that followed, the St. Croix County District Attorney's office filed formal charges against both suspects. Cameron and Helmueller were charged with first-degree reckless homicide in connection with Richard Rose's death. Helmueller is also known by the name Sovereignty Sovereign. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting continued as the legal process against the two accused men commenced.
