On the evening of August 18, 2005, in the quiet community of Edmonds, Washington, the life of 49-year-old Yvonne Lewis came to a tragic and violent end. Inside her home on 161st Place SW, a heated argument with her husband, Robert Lewis, escalated, shattering the peace of the suburban cul-de-sac their family had called home for two decades. The dispute culminated in Robert fatally shooting Yvonne before turning the gun on himself.
The horrifying events unfolded while two of their three
sons were nearby. Their youngest, an 11-year-old boy, made a frantic call to 911, reporting his parents' fight. He told the dispatcher that his mother had screamed for him to go outside and call for help. It was during this call that the sound of gunshots echoed through the line, a chilling testament to the tragedy unfolding within the home. The couple's 16-year-old son was at a neighbor's house at the time of the shooting, while their eldest, who had just turned 18, was away in Eastern Washington.
Yvonne Lewis was found deceased inside the residence, having suffered gunshot wounds to her head and torso. Her husband, 50-year-old Robert Lewis, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he died the following night. Investigators found no prior record of domestic violence calls to the couple's home, and neighbors expressed shock, stating they had not witnessed any previous violence between the two.
In the wake of the murder-suicide, friends, family, and community members remembered Yvonne as a devoted mother who was deeply dedicated to her three sons. She was described as a kind and caring person, an "awesome" woman who worked hard for her children and was a devout Christian. Yvonne was an active member of the Westgate Chapel in Edmonds, where she sang in the choir and was considered a treasured and generous member. She also worked in the food services department at Meadowdale High School, where she was well-liked by staff and students, known for offering kind and encouraging words. A memorial service was held in her honor at Westgate Chapel on August 24, 2005.
