Julie Johnson, a 37-year-old Caucasian female, was found dead in her home, the victim of a tragic and violent act that would soon be understood as a murder-suicide. Her life was taken by her husband, 40-year-old Keith Johnson, who then drove a short distance away before taking his own life.
The events of that Thursday morning unfolded with a grim sequence. Investigators determined that Keith Johnson first shot and killed his wife at their residence in the Country Lane Mobile Home Park on Madison Street. After ending Julie's life, he got into his red pickup truck and drove to the 1100 block of Rainier Avenue North, parking in front of the historic Van Eaton mansion. It was there, inside the cab of his truck, that he turned the gun on himself. A witness in the vicinity reported hearing a "pop" and then saw the truck slowly rolling backward with Keith slumped over the wheel.
When law enforcement arrived at the scene of the suicide, their investigation quickly led them to the couple's home, where they discovered Julie's body. The motive for the devastating act appeared to be rooted in personal turmoil. Friends of the family indicated that the couple had been experiencing financial difficulties. One friend mentioned that Keith had been acting strangely in the days leading up to the incident, wearing dark glasses and staying in darkened rooms within their home. A search of the residence uncovered approximately two dozen loaded weapons.
