In the quiet community of Kennewick, Washington, the life of Kaitlin Austin, a 16-year-old White/Caucasian female, came to a tragic and unexpected end on June 9, 2014. An honor student and talented softball pitcher at Kamiakin High School, Kaitlin was known for her bright smile and ambitious nature. She was a celebrated athlete, having contributed to three state championships with her team, and was looking forward to the future with her boyfriend of two and a half years.
The afternoon of
her death began like any other, but a horrific discovery shattered the peace of the Austin family home. Kaitlin's father, Andrew Austin, returned from work to find both Kaitlin and her 12-year-old brother, Ethan, deceased in Kaitlin's bedroom. Both had suffered gunshot wounds, and a handgun belonging to their father was found near their bodies. Initially, the community was gripped with fear, worried that a killer might be at large. Police, however, found no signs of a break-in or evidence that anyone else had been in the house, quickly assuring the public that there was no ongoing threat.
Months of investigation by the Kennewick Police Department and the Benton County Coroner's office eventually brought a devastating conclusion to light. The deaths were officially ruled a murder-suicide. Investigators determined that Ethan had shot his older sister multiple times in her head and torso before turning the gun on himself, dying from a single gunshot wound to the head. The investigation found that the 9mm handgun used had been taken from a case in the parents' room. There were no arrests, as the sole suspect in Kaitlin's death was her brother, who was also deceased.
