On a tragic day in June of 2019, the community of White Swan on the Yakama Reservation was shaken by a violent outburst that claimed the lives of five people. Among them was Michelle Starnes, a 51-year-old woman, whose life was cut short on June 8th by an act of gun violence. This devastating event left a lasting mark on the families and the entire reservation.
The incident that led to Starnes's death was a mass homicide that also claimed the lives of four other individuals: John Cagle,
Catherine Eneas, Thomas Hernandez, and Dennis Overaker. The investigation into the killings pointed to a situation possibly related to drugs, though the full motive behind the brutal slayings remained a subject of the subsequent legal proceedings. The bodies of Starnes, Eneas, Overacker, and Hernandez were discovered inside a trailer, while Cagle's body was found in a separate game room on the property.
The investigation swiftly led to the identification of two suspects, James Dean Cloud and Donovan Quinn Carter Cloud. They were subsequently charged in U.S. District Court with a range of serious offenses including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, and assault with a deadly weapon. The legal process that followed brought some measure of justice for the victims and their families.
In March 2022, a jury found James Dean Cloud guilty on four counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Starnes, Eneas, Overacker, and Hernandez. He was also convicted of kidnapping, carjacking, assault, and brandishing a firearm. For his role in the crimes, James Cloud faced a potential life sentence. His accomplice, Donovan Quinn Carter Cloud, entered a guilty plea to charges of carjacking and brandishing a firearm and was expected to face a significant prison sentence of up to 27 years.
