In the pre-dawn hours of April 10, 2021, 78-year-old Ivan Maik, a White male, drove to a medical facility in Arlington, Washington, for his routine dialysis appointment, a trip he made three times a week. A lifelong resident of Snohomish County, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and a retired Forest Service worker, Maik lived a quiet and simple life. On this particular morning, his journey took a tragic and fatal turn.

Centers on Smokey Point Boulevard around 5:30 a.m., Maik had stopped at a bank in Marysville to withdraw cash from an ATM. Unbeknownst to him, a dark-colored 2013 or 2014 Range Rover Sport was seen following his vehicle. After Maik parked his car near the front of the building, the suspect's SUV pulled into the same parking lot.
As Maik waited in his car, the tranquil morning was shattered by an act of brutal violence. An individual, described as slender and between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-9, wearing dark clothing including a hooded jacket and possibly a mask, exited the Range Rover and approached Maik's vehicle. Two employees leaving the building witnessed the harrowing event unfold. They saw the suspect crouched by Maik's car before opening the driver's side door and shooting him in the head. The assailant then fired shots at the two witnesses, who managed to retreat back into the building unharmed. The shooter then got back into the Range Rover and fled the scene, heading south on Smokey Point Boulevard.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that Ivan Maik's death was a homicide caused by gunshot wounds. Despite the fact that Maik had withdrawn money shortly before the attack, police reported that he had not been robbed, adding another layer of mystery to the motive behind the killing. Investigators have considered it a targeted assault, though the specific reasons remain unclear.
In the years following the murder, the suspect remains at large. The Arlington Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies, has continued to investigate the case. Maik's daughter, his only child, has pleaded for the public's help and contributed a significant amount of her own money to a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. The total reward stands at $25,000. The brazen and senseless killing of the elderly veteran left his family and the community in shock and searching for answers that have yet to come.
