In the late summer of 2021, the quiet community of Kennewick, Washington, was rocked by a tragic event that claimed the life of 75-year-old Dan Kaufman, a Caucasian male. On August 25th, he and his 68-year-old wife, Vickie, were discovered deceased inside their home on South Gum Street, having suffered apparent gunshot wounds. The initial investigation by the Kennewick Police Department and the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab also revealed that a fire had been intentionally set inside the
residence.
The investigation into the couple's death quickly intertwined with a wider, violent rampage that had unfolded across the Tri-Cities area. The prime suspect in the murders of Dan and Vickie Kaufman was identified as their son, Ryan Kaufman. His violent spree is believed to have begun in the early morning hours, miles away in Finley, where he reportedly shot two neighbors, one fatally, and set their home on fire. He is also suspected of setting fires at two International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union halls in Kennewick.
The tragic chain of events culminated in a police chase that ended in West Richland. Ryan Kaufman, driving a pickup truck, was pursued by law enforcement. The chase concluded with an exchange of gunfire, during which Kaufman's truck became engulfed in flames. He was later found deceased inside the vehicle. While the official identification was pending forensic confirmation due to the severity of the fire, authorities strongly believed the deceased to be Ryan Kaufman.
The motive for Ryan Kaufman's violent actions remains largely unanswered. Investigations and reports released later indicated that he had a history of mental health issues, including depression and psychosis. According to those familiar with him, his behavior had become increasingly erratic in the months leading up to the tragic events after he reportedly stopped taking his prescribed medication. Shell casings found at the scene of his parents' murder were linked to a shotgun he had used to gain entry to the union halls. In the end, no arrests were made as the sole suspect in the death of Dan Kaufman and the other victims of the rampage had taken his own life.
