On the evening of December 15, 2021, a heated argument over the online video game Diablo II culminated in the tragic death of 34-year-old Andrew W. Dickson in Amboy, Washington. What began as a dispute over in-game loot between friends escalated into a fatal confrontation that ended a life and led to a murder charge.
Dickson and his longtime friend, Joshua G. Spellman, were engrossed in the game when a dispute arose, causing Dickson to become increasingly agitated.
The argument intensified to the point that Spellman allegedly warned Dickson to calm down or risk being shot. The conflict spilled over from the virtual world into the physical one, with the two men, who lived on the same property in separate residences, confronting each other.
Following the verbal altercation, Spellman is said to have retrieved a pistol he kept near his computer. He then walked over to the main house where Dickson was and fired a warning shot into the air. When Dickson continued to engage in the argument, Spellman shot him in the torso.
Emergency services were called, and Andrew W. Dickson was rushed to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver. He underwent surgery for the gunshot wound to his abdomen but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Joshua G. Spellman was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree murder. During his appearance in Clark County Superior Court, prosecutors requested a $2 million bail, but the judge set it at $750,000. It was noted that Spellman had no prior criminal history. The investigation into Dickson's death pointed to the argument over the video game as the primary catalyst for the deadly encounter.
