In the early hours of Labor Day, September 5, 2022, a quiet home on Grandview Road in Ferndale, Washington, became the scene of a sudden and violent tragedy. Inside, 44-year-old Robert Beaugez was confronted by an acquaintance, James Hayes, who was also 44 years old. The situation escalated quickly, leaving both men dead in what police would later describe as a suspected murder-suicide.
According to witness accounts and police statements, the tragic events were set in motion by a volatile personal dispute. Investigators believe jealousy was the motive, stemming from Beaugez's relationship with a woman who had previously dated Hayes. It is thought that the two men may have had a heated phone conversation shortly before the fatal encounter. Just after midnight, police received a call reporting a shooting at Beaugez's residence.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a grim scene. A witness reported that Hayes had forcefully entered the home by kicking open the door. A brief physical altercation then erupted between the two men. The fight ended when Hayes produced a firearm and shot Beaugez.
