In the late summer of 1910 in the town of White Plains, Kentucky, a dedicated law enforcement officer, City Marshal W.D. Coursey, would lose his life in a sudden act of violence. At the age of 35, Marshal Coursey had been serving his community for a brief period, a tenure that would be tragically cut short. On Monday, September 12th, he was carrying out his duties on the town's main street when he encountered an intoxicated man creating a public disturbance.
As Marshal Coursey attempted
to arrest the individual for breach of peace, the situation escalated with lethal speed. The man, whose name is not mentioned in the available records, suddenly produced a handgun. Before Coursey could react, the suspect fired, striking the marshal in the abdomen. Despite the mortal wound he had sustained, Marshal Coursey demonstrated incredible bravery and resolve.
