In the small town of Campton, Kentucky, a tragic event unfolded on June 26, 1978, forever marking the community. Jimmy Ray Tolson, the 23-year-old White male Chief of Police, was sitting at his desk in city hall, engaged in a conversation with his brother and his girlfriend. The day was like any other, filled with the routine duties of a dedicated law enforcement officer who had previously served as a Wolfe County deputy sheriff.
Suddenly, the calm was shattered by a single gunshot. A 19-year-old youth, positioned in a parked car across the street, had fired a rifle through the window of the city hall. The bullet struck Chief Tolson in the head, killing him instantly. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Tolson's brother reacted quickly, grabbing his brother's service revolver and firing six shots at the fleeing vehicle, striking it twice.
The motive for this violent act was later revealed to be retaliation. Chief Tolson had recently arrested the shooter's brother for being drunk and causing a disturbance. The brazen attack on the police chief was a direct response to him carrying out his duties. The suspect was later apprehended at his home. He was subsequently convicted for the murder of Chief Jimmy Ray Tolson and sentenced to prison. The individual responsible for this act of violence remained incarcerated until his own death on January 24, 1994.
