On January 30, 1992, White male Steve Lynn Bennett, the 40-year-old Sheriff of Powell County, Kentucky, was killed in the line of duty while attempting to serve an arrest warrant in a rural area near Stanton known as Little Hardwick Creek. Sheriff Bennett had traveled to the location to assist his deputy and brother-in-law, Arthur Clay Briscoe, who had encountered resistance from a suspect earlier that day.
