On a tragic day in February, the quiet community of Paintsville, Kentucky, was shaken by a horrific series of events that left four people dead, including 70-year-old Arlene Nickell. On February 10, 2018, Arlene and her husband, James Nickell, were found shot to death in the kitchen of their home in the McKenzie Branch area. The grim discovery was the beginning of a devastating murder-suicide carried out by their own son.
The perpetrator was identified as Joseph Nickell, who, after
killing his parents, continued his violent spree. He then went to a nearby apartment in Paintsville where he fatally shot his girlfriend, Lindsey Vanhoose, and her mother, Patricia Vanhoose. Following the murders, Joseph Nickell took his own life.
Investigations into the motive behind the tragic events pointed towards Joseph Nickell's long-standing battle with drug addiction. According to the family's pastor, his struggles with addiction had intensified following the recent death of his sister. Just days before the killings, Joseph had attended church services with his parents and appeared to be under the influence of some substance, with his mother having to calm him down.
