On the evening of February 17, 2018, in Newport, Kentucky, a 24-year-old Black / African American man named Jonathan C. Hayward was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 10:22 p.m. inside a residence on the 300 block of Lindsey Street. Hayward sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to the University of Cincinnati Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In the days following the shooting, a suspect, 25-year-old Joshua Presswood, surrendered to authorities.
Presswood was subsequently charged with murder in connection with Hayward's death. Investigators believe that Presswood shot Hayward three times inside the Lindsey Street home. It was reported that the two men were acquainted with each other, though a specific motive for the shooting was not immediately released.
Following his surrender, Presswood was taken into custody at the Hamilton County Justice Center as he awaited extradition to Kentucky. The investigation into the shooting involved a significant police response, and authorities were able to identify Presswood as a suspect through leads gathered in the weeks after the incident. Hayward's father described his son as a kind-hearted individual who was always willing to help others.
