In early 2021, a disturbing series of events unfolded in Williamsburg, Kentucky, involving the disappearance and death of 57-year-old Donna G. Lay. A White / Caucasian female, Lay resided in an apartment on South 10th Street which she shared with her boyfriend, John Phillip Meadows. She was last seen alive on January 7, 2021, but it would be weeks before the grim reality of her fate was discovered by authorities.
Concerns for her safety began to mount when a neighbor, who hadn't seen Lay in some time, filed a missing person report on January 27, prompting the Williamsburg Police Department to investigate.
When officers initially followed up on the welfare check, they spoke with Meadows, whose behavior and account of Lay's whereabouts raised immediate suspicions. His story reportedly did not add up, leading investigators to dig deeper. During this period, it was later revealed that Meadows had continued to live in the apartment they shared, all while Lay's deceased body remained inside. According to court proceedings, Meadows had fatally shot Lay in the head on or around January 8. Instead of contacting authorities, he wrapped her body in a blanket and initially hid it under their bed for approximately two weeks.
As the days passed, Meadows took further steps to conceal the crime. He moved Lay's remains into a large garbage can, sealing it with duct tape and wrapping it in black plastic in an apparent effort to mask the odor of decomposition. This container was then stashed inside a closet in the apartment. On February 1, 2021, police returned to the residence with a search warrant. Upon entering, cadaver dogs alerted officers to the closet where the sealed trash can was located. Inside, they made the gruesome discovery of Lay's decomposing remains, confirming the homicide.
John Meadows, who was 58 at the time of the arrest, was taken into custody and charged with murder, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with physical evidence. During the subsequent legal proceedings, prosecutors presented evidence that Meadows had performed incriminating internet searches on his phone, looking up information related to body decomposition. Meadows’ defense team attempted to argue that the shooting was an act of self-defense, claiming that Lay had been the aggressor and had pulled a gun on him during an argument about infidelity.
However, the jury rejected this narrative, swayed by the physical evidence and Meadows’ actions following the shooting. In January 2023, after a trial in the Whitley Circuit Court, John Phillip Meadows was found guilty of murder and tampering with physical evidence. The jury recommended a severe penalty for his crimes, and he was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the murder charge, with an additional concurrent five-year sentence for the tampering charge.
