On the night of September 12, 2021, an argument erupted between Sallie and her 29-year-old boyfriend, Justin Davis, as they were driving. The disagreement escalated, leading them to pull over in the 1600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. In the ensuing confrontation, a handgun was introduced into the volatile situation. Davis later admitted to police that he had retrieved the weapon, pointing it at both himself and Sallie.
