In the summer of 1992, on a tragic day in August, the lives of two individuals were violently cut short in a quiet Minnetonka, Minnesota residence. On August 5th, 49-year-old Kevin Kelly, a male, and 55-year-old Barbara Lund were discovered deceased, both having suffered from multiple gunshot wounds. Kelly, a former Iowa state legislator, had built a career as a lobbyist and attorney after serving in the Iowa House of Representatives and later the state Senate.
The investigation into the
double homicide quickly focused on one primary suspect: Russell Lund Jr., the estranged husband of Barbara Lund. Russell was a notable figure in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area as an heir to a grocery store chain. At the time of the murders, the Lunds were embroiled in a contentious divorce. Barbara had been residing in Aspen, Colorado, and was in a relationship with Kevin Kelly for several months leading up to their deaths.
Following the discovery of the bodies, law enforcement zeroed in on Russell Lund Jr. He was apprehended on August 18, 1992, and formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder. In a surprising turn of events, Lund was able to secure his release after posting a staggering $12 million bail, though his freedom came with the strict condition that he be confined to a psychiatric facility.
The legal proceedings against Russell Lund Jr. would never reach a conclusion. Before the case could go to trial, Lund took his own life on October 31, 1992. His suicide brought an abrupt and unresolved end to the criminal case, leaving the families of Kevin Kelly and Barbara Lund without the full measure of justice and with lingering questions that would never be answered in a courtroom.
