A bright and promising future was tragically cut short for Heather Rose McPherson, a 24-year-old White/Caucasian woman, on April 19, 2009. A resident of Plymouth, Minnesota, Heather was a vibrant individual on the cusp of completing her nursing degree from North Hennepin Community College. She was already making a difference in the lives of others as a Certified Nursing Assistant in home health care.
Her life, however, was not solely defined by her career aspirations; she was a devoted mother to her young daughter, Alexandra, and her greatest joy was found in the time they spent together.
Heather's life was brought to a violent end in the parking lot of a McDonald's in Maple Grove. She had arranged to meet Sedric Jerome Larkins to end their relationship. In a senseless act of violence, Larkins shot Heather. After she fell to the ground, he shot her at least once more. This brutal act silenced a loving mother, a dedicated student, and a cherished daughter.
Following the shooting, Larkins fled the scene. His attempt to escape was short-lived. Police officers, after observing his car speeding on the interstate, pulled him over. As an officer approached the vehicle, they discovered that Larkins had taken his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The tragic event left a community in mourning and a family to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a young woman full of life and potential. Heather was remembered by her loved ones as a beautiful and vibrant person who brought joy to those around her.
