On a Thursday afternoon, September 5, 2013, in the quiet Minneapolis suburb of Roseville, a fatal encounter unfolded in the parking lot of the CPI Card Group. Joseph Yang, a 33-year-old Asian man from Brooklyn Park, arrived for what he believed was a prearranged meeting to sign some documents. This meeting, however, was a tragic ruse that would end his life.
The man he was meeting, 44-year-old Cheng Vang of Roseville, had ulterior motives driven by the suspicion that Yang was having an affair with his wife, Yong Vang, who was a coworker of Yang's at CPI.
Surveillance footage from the area captured the Vangs arriving in their Toyota FJ Cruiser and parking near the loading docks. Moments later, Yang pulled up in his Audi. As Yang and Cheng Vang met between their vehicles, Vang, who was holding a pen and papers as a distraction, suddenly produced a semi-automatic pistol. He shot Yang multiple times, killing him at the scene. Shortly after, as his wife looked on, Cheng Vang turned the legally purchased firearm on himself, inflicting a fatal gunshot wound. He died later at the Hennepin County Medical Center.
The investigation that followed quickly pieced together the tragic events of that day. Police determined that Cheng Vang had lured Yang to the familiar location under false pretenses. His wife, Yong Vang, who was present during the entire ordeal, was initially taken into custody for questioning but was not considered a suspect or an accomplice in the murder. She cooperated with the authorities, and interviews with family and friends revealed Cheng Vang's belief about the extramarital affair, which was identified as the motive for the murder-suicide. No other suspects were sought in connection with the incident, and the case was closed with the deaths of both the victim and the perpetrator. Joseph Yang was remembered by his family and friends as a loving man who cared deeply for those around him.
