In the quiet of a late winter evening in Hudson Township, Minnesota, the life of 29-year-old Caucasian female Katie Ray Christopherson came to a tragic end on February 24, 2014. What began as a report of a suspicious vehicle would soon escalate into a violent encounter and a desperate flight into the frozen landscape, culminating in a murder-suicide.
Earlier that day, Katie and her 24-year-old boyfriend, Devin Blowers, were linked to a burglary at the Douglas County Animal Hospital,
where veterinary medications were stolen. This act set the stage for the tragic events that would unfold hours later. That evening, a Douglas County sheriff's deputy, Dustin Alexander, responded to a call about a suspicious car parked in a rural driveway. Inside were Katie and Devin. During the interaction, Devin shot Deputy Alexander in the chest; the deputy's life was saved by his bullet-resistant vest.
Following the shooting, the couple fled in their vehicle, but their escape was short-lived as their car became stuck in the snow. They then continued on foot, disappearing into the darkness of the surrounding woods while exchanging further gunfire with the officer. A massive law enforcement response ensued, including a State Patrol helicopter, which was instrumental in the search.
Several hours later, in the early morning hours, authorities made a grim discovery near an outbuilding on the property. Using infrared imaging, they located the bodies of Katie Ray Christopherson and Devin Blowers in the deep snow. The investigation concluded that Devin Blowers shot and killed Katie before turning the gun on himself. A handgun and a shotgun were recovered at the scene.
