In the quiet of a late December night on the Fond du Lac Reservation, the life of 16-year-old Joseph James Peterson Jr. was tragically cut short. Known affectionately as "Migizi" he was a funny, loving, and kind young man from Cloquet, Minnesota, who was known for his generosity and his love for dancing. His friends and family often called him a "Flex God," a testament to his vibrant personality.
He was a member of the Bear Clan, "Makwan Odoodeman."
On December 28, 2020, what began as a gathering of young people took a devastating turn. Joseph was outside a residence on Giiniw Road with a group that included 18-year-old Joseph James Fohrenkam. The group had been drinking together when Fohrenkam began showing off and waving a 9mm handgun. The reckless display of the firearm ended in tragedy when the gun discharged, fatally wounding Joseph. Witnesses who had left the immediate scene reported hearing several more gunshots, alleging that Fohrenkam was either shooting at a bottle or the truck they had been in.
Following the shooting, Fohrenkam and two other individuals, his 38-year-old mother and a 25-year-old man, fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. An investigation was immediately launched, and the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office identified the three as persons of interest. While the 25-year-old was located and cooperated with authorities, a search ensued for Fohrenkam and his mother. A warrant for Fohrenkam's arrest on a charge of second-degree manslaughter was issued the day after the shooting.
The search for the main suspect concluded on January 5, 2021, when Joseph James Fohrenkam was found with his mother at an apartment complex on the White Earth Reservation in Mahnomen. He was taken into custody and formally charged with second-degree manslaughter. His mother was also questioned and later faced a charge of aiding an offender. The untimely death of Joseph James Peterson Jr., a beloved son, twin brother, and friend, left a profound void in his community, a life full of promise ended in a senseless act of gun violence.
