Gabrielle Agnes Johnson, a 23-year-old woman from Duluth, Minnesota, was tragically shot on November 11, 2021, while sitting in a parked pickup truck on the 5600 block of North Girard Avenue in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. She sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was immediately taken to Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis. Despite medical efforts, Gabrielle succumbed to her injuries three days later, on November 14, 2021.
The investigation into Gabrielle's death revealed that she was
shot by Julius Smith, a 24-year-old resident of Brooklyn Center. Smith was sitting behind Gabrielle in the truck when the incident occurred. Witnesses at the scene identified Smith as the shooter and described the shooting as an accident. Smith initially claimed that the occupants of the truck had been robbed at gunpoint by two men, and that one of the assailants' guns had discharged when he tried to knock it out of the man's hand, believing it to be a fake.
However, surveillance footage obtained by investigators contradicted Smith's account and supported the witnesses' statements. As a result, Julius Smith was charged with second-degree manslaughter for culpable negligence causing unreasonable risk. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of negligent handling of firearms and the importance of thorough investigative work to uncover the truth.
