In the quiet town of Winfield, Kansas, the evening of August 13, 1903, was shattered by an act of sudden and senseless violence that claimed the life of Sterling Race, a 28-year-old man. The community had gathered for a weekly concert by W.H. Caman and his military band, a customary summer pastime that drew a crowd of thousands to the corner of Ninth Avenue and Main Street.
